Green-Ginger Iced Tea

This green tea recipe is a classic Japanese favorite. Green Tea dates back some 5,000 years and has been used in China for medicinal purposes for many, many years. Green Tea has been useful as a weight loss mechanism and provides multiple vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E, C, B, B5, H and K.

  

Basic Simple Syrup

 

1 (3-inch slice) fresh ginger, thinly sliced

 

8 cup(s) cold water

 

8 green tea bags

 

Ice cubes

 

Lemon wedges, for garnish

 

 

1. Prepare the Basic Simple Syrup as directed, adding half of the sliced ginger before bringing it to a boil.

 

2. Remove from the heat and let steep for 30 minutes.

 

3. Strain the ginger syrup into a large measuring cup.

 

4. In a large saucepan, combine the remaining sliced ginger with the cold water and bring to a boil.

 

5. Remove from the heat and add the tea bags. Let steep for 6 minutes.

 

6. Strain the tea into a large bowl and let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until chilled.

 

7. Pour the tea into a large pitcher and stir in 1 cup of the ginger syrup, or more to taste; refrigerate the rest for later use.

 

Serve in tall glasses over ice, garnished with lemon wedges.

 

Make Ahead:

The iced tea can be refrigerated in a covered pitcher for up to 2 days.

 

 

To Make Simple Syrup:

 

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

 

1. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water and bring to a boil.

 

2. Simmer the mixture over moderate heat until the sugar dissolves.

 

Make Ahead:

The syrup can be refrigerated for up to 3 weeks.
