Classic All-American Bacon Cheeseburgers (Indianapolis Colts Tailgating Recipes)

This hearty, satisfying tailgating burger recipe honors the Indianapolis Colts of the South Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). As the Indianapolis Colts, the team won Super Bowl XLI in 2006 against the Chicago Bears. Use this recipe as you tailgate at Lucas Oil Stadium with all your Colts family and friends. Go Colts!

 

Special Sauce 

 

1/2 cup light mayonnaise

 

1/4 cup chili sauce

 

2 Tablespoons dill pickle relish

 

Burgers 

 

2 pounds 90% lean ground beef

 

2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

 

1/2 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground pepper

 

6 whole-wheat hamburger buns, split

 

6 small lettuce leaves

 

1 large beefsteak tomato, cut in 6 thin slices

 

6 thin slices Vidalia onion

 

Nonstick spray

 

6 slices (1 ounce each) sharp Cheddar cheese 6 strips cooked bacon

 

 

 

Special Sauce:

 

1. Mix ingredients in a bowl.

 

Burgers:

 

1. Gently mix ingredients in a large bowl. Shape into six 1-in.-thick burgers.

 

2. Heat outdoor grill. Toast buns on grill; remove to a platter.

 

2. Spread 1 Tablespoon Special Sauce on bun tops and bottoms.

 

3. Top bottoms with lettuce, tomato and onion.

 

4. Coat burgers with nonstick spray.

 

5. Grill, turning once, 10 to 12 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer inserted from side to middle registers 160*F.

 

6. Top with cheese and bacon; cover grill 45 seconds or until cheese starts to melt.

 

7. Transfer burgers to buns.

 

8. Serve remaining sauce on the side.

 

Makes 1 bacon cheeseburger.
